Business Decision Making

Good decision making and cost-benefit analysis tends to follow the same steps and processes routinely, regardless of the subject or the circumstances surrounding the situation. Business decision making is not that different from academic or everyday decision making. Great business leaders are good decision makers and these decision making skills often follow them throughout their lives. Decision making is a skill that can be learned and improved upon.

The steps usually involved in decision making include:

  • Identifying the problem that needs to be addressed
  • Acquiring additional information about the situation
  • Formulating options for addressing the problem
  • Making a plan by choosing the most favorable and feasible option
  • Executing the chosen plan
  • Following up by relaying necessary information and identifying other problems within the situation

These steps describe the process that most rational people go through when faced with a problem. They may not be conscious steps that people sit down and work through because many people run through this process on auto pilot, making decisions spontaneously. Other problems, especially in the business field, are more complex and have many possible resolutions and long-term results. Using decision making tools can assist business people in evaluating every situation and making a rational choice for the best plan of action.

Reactive decision making can be an entirely different situation. Reactive decision making usually results from a time of crisis, looming deadline, or emergency. When people are faced with a problem that needs an immediate decision, such as an individual caught inside of a building that catches on fire, they often resort to the first option that comes to mind, which may not be the wisest choice. This situation reinforces the importance of having contingency plans for various business issues outlined so that in these instances these plans are the first options that do come to mind, encouraging wise decision making during times of stress.
